Testing is indespensable. Or is it?
I added a set of rules (questions, really) to my wiki, concerning product test as measurement of product quality. Please check it out and spread the word: Article on PlanetProject.

Depends what sort of testing you are talking about.
We're working towards specification test driven development and continuous integration, so we build against specifications that are already tests, and run our tests on an automatic cycle as regression testing.
Sounds like you're talking about a team doing test cycles separately from development.
Hi Anonymous,
Thank you for your comment. Let me clarify: im talking about any test activity. Befor starting to test something or against anything, you need to be clear about the test purpose.
And yes, many times organizations see development and testing as two activities devided by time. Or - even worse - as an activity to find bugs. Most industries have long abandoned testing as a means to QA, because they found it to be ineffective.
key point is to recognize testing as measuring quality, and the key question is what uncertainty do I hope to clear by testing.
Cheers!
Rolf
